Dr. Jill Roberts was the girlfriend of Chuck Bartowski for two years, while studying at Stanford University in the action/comedy series Chuck on NBC. She is portrayed by Jordana Brewster, and serves as the tertiary antagonist of Season 2.

She is a prominent figure in the series mythology, though she did not appear until the middle of Season Two. Jill made the most appearances among villains in season two with four, surpassing the season's main antagonist Ted Roark, and his henchman Vincent, who each made three appearances. She is the only season two antagonist to survive.

Background[]

Jill-Roberts-fulcrum

Chuck and Jill met at Stanford,[1] however there are conflicting reports on how they met. In "Chuck Versus the Alma Mater", a flashback shows that Bryce introduced Chuck to Jill, Chuck became interested in her when he learned that she played Everquest. In the Chuck Versus the Intersect, however, Chuck states that he met her when she had dropped her books and he helped her to pick them up, and they knocked heads. This could be explained if she is indeed in the courtyard, thus running into each other, or Jill and Chuck did not meet that day.

Throughout the first two seasons, Chuck is seen as unable to get past his breakup with Jill at Stanford. Jill dumped him after he was expelled from Stanford for cheating, something he did not do, but she could not believe. She later explains that she left him because Fulcrum had already recruited her and told her that a break up was desired.[2] Chuck was led to believe that Jill had dated and slept with Bryce, however when Chuck meets Jill again in Season Two, she explains that she never slept with Bryce, and a lie detector confirms this.

Jill was recruited by Fulcrum while at Stanford, they offered her everything she wanted and she accepted it, by the time she realized the things she had to do as her side of the bargain, she tells Chuck she was in too deep. It is later revealed that it was her uncle, Bernie Ominsky who recruited her into Fulcrum.[2]

Jill first appears in the Season Two episode "Chuck Versus the Ex", where Chuck begins seeing her again after she learns of his affiliation with the CIA. Her true identity is revealed to Sarah and Casey when a list of Fulcrum agents are decoded. Chuck flashes on a text-message on her phone, which makes him realize what she is; the text instructed her to meet with Leader, she is designated "7RCCK" for her classification in the Fulcrum list decrypt. Chuck later flashes on her code name as well, Sand Storm, when Casey deliberately says it.

Manipulation[]

When Chuck took her to Castle in Chuck Versus the Gravitron, it is assumed that knowledge of the substation caused Fulcrum to form the plan to infiltrate the base. The plan involves Jill telling Chuck she was supposed to take him to a waiting car at the carnival at gunpoint, Chuck runs from Leader who is shot by Jill, and they escape from the carnival. Jill is taken back to Castle and questioned. She tells them the location of Leader, her Fulcrum handler, so Casey and Sarah go and arrest him. Meanwhile, she convinces Chuck to let her out of the restraints. When Casey and Sarah return, she forces them to drop their guns and let Leader go. Leader and Jill then force Chuck to give them access to Castle's computer system so that they can look for Bryce, as like other Fulcrum agents, they believe that he is the human Intersect.

Arrest[]

When Chuck saw that Jill was prepared to kill Sarah, he intervened, pretending that he was trying to save Jill. She is arrested and taken into CIA custody by Chuck himself after he tricks her into getting into a Nerd Herder, he puts her in the vehicle's "detention mode" and announces she is under arrest, and also that he is breaking up with her.[2]

Search for Orion[]

When Orion is kidnapped by Fulcrum, Chuck goes to Jill for help finding his dad. He tells Jill he isn't authorized to make deals, but he hopes in this case they'd make an exception. Chuck and Jill go to her parents house, pretending they are engaged, in order to smoke out Jill's family friend Bernie Ominsky, a Fulcrum agent, who is without guards only at family functions. Jill's mother, Judy, and father, Wally throw the pair an engagement party - surprised and delighted their daughter is back from 'Helsinki' and back with Chuck, whom they met during the Stanford days. Bernie, who know Jill had been in prison, not Helsinki, asks what's going on and Jill admits to a deal with the CIA, furious, Bernie chases the couple to the attic where he drops dead from a heart attack.

After this failed attempt, General Beckman orders Casey to send Jill back to prison. Chuck convinces the General to give her one more chance. After heading to a secret Fulcrum recruitment facility, Casey and Chuck are captured as Sarah and Jill go in to rescue them. While Sarah is pinned down by gunfire, Jill sneaks off. She overhears Fulcrum agents talking about Black Rock. Jill finds Chuck and tells him about Black Rock. Chuck, flashes on Black Rock, and sees that Jill has fulfilled her side of the bargain. He tells her they weren't going to let her go, but he will. He gives her the prop engagement ring, "it's worth a lot" and it will fund her life as a fugitive. Chuck cuts away her tracker and allows Jill to escape before Casey and Sarah arrive.

Trivia[]

  • When Chuck is frustrated into being assigned by Beckman to meet with Jill again, Chuck states that Jill slept with Bryce Larkin, to which Casey asks "Who hasn't?", referencing Sarah once being Bryce's girlfriend as well.
  • Jill appears to be one of three girlfriends Chuck has had during the series other than Sarah, first being Lou Palone in Season One, then Chuck dating Jill again in Season Two, and Hannah dated Chuck in Season Three.
  • When Chuck, Sarah, and Casey discovered the hard drive with the list of Fulcrum agents on it, many of the agents depicted on the list were probably CIA double agents, meaning they worked for both the CIA and Fulcrum. Beckman said, "Guy LeFleur obtained a list of CIA code names for the agents he worked with. We have reason to believe it's a list of Fulcrum operatives." This does not necessarily mean they were all double agents, just that they were agents known to the CIA whether they were CIA or Fulcrum. Beckman later confirms this with the comment, "... we'll have the identity of every Fulcrum agent with whom Guy was in contact." And Sarah's comment, "We think he might have a list of all the Fulcrum agents that were blackmailing him."
  • The discrepancy between her first meeting with Chuck in 'Chuck Versus the Intersect' and 'Chuck Versus the Alma Mater' can be explain by the simple fact that 'Chuck Versus the Intersect' was the pilot of the series and main things change after the pilot airs. The apartment that Ellie, Devon and Chuck share is a prime example as the area where Sarah, disguised as a ninja, fought Chuck and Morgan and later the group hug at the end of the episode is not in the apartment after this episode.
