Chuck Versus Agent X is the twenty-second episode in the fourth season of Chuck, which aired on May 2, 2011.
Synopsis[]
Chuck and Sarah are given time off to have a weekend of fun, but Captain Awesome's plans for Chuck's bachelor weekend don’t go quite as expected.
Meanwhile, Ellie's investigation into her father's computer leads to a life-changing discovery.
Full Story[]
At the order of Vivian Volkoff, Riley (Ray Wise) and Jasmine (India de Beaufort) begin searching for Stephen Bartowski's laptop for information on "Agent X".
Meanwhile, Chuck, Morgan, Big Mike, Jeff and Lester are excited to be invited to Las Vegas for Chuck's bachelor party. However, it turns out that Devon was taking them to Las Vecas a Nevada State Park. Not at all what they expected.
During the night, Riley and Jasmine trace the laptop, which Devon mistakenly brought. Worse, a drunken Jeff thinks that Jasmine is a stripper hired by Devon, and tries going along with her "act". Chuck races to save him, while Casey takes out the accompanying mercenaries, having both Morgan and Devon whittle spears from sticks to keep them out of the way.
Chuck attempts to ambush Jasmine but she notices him in the reflection of her knife. While fighting Jasmine, Chuck uses the laptop as a shield, and it is stabbed through. Casey arrives to knock her out and they carry Jeff back to the limo, where Big Mike and Lester are waiting, and they drive home, worried that since Devon had brought Ellie's bag, they might be in trouble, too.
Meanwhile, Sarah is notified at her bachelorette party that a CIA facility had been breached. Not knowing that Devon has accidentally taken the laptop, Sarah tells Ellie that she knows she still has the laptop and the site where it was once held had been breached. When Chuck returns, he tells Sarah he must tell Ellie the truth. He tells Ellie he knows she's still investigating her father's research, and she then realizes Chuck is still a CIA agent, derailing his big explanation speech. She says she isn't mad he did it just that he didn't tell her, that he was made for better things than the Buy More. For full disclosure, Chuck then brings Ellie to Castle, she wants to know what was so important that they needed the base. Chuck replies that its him, that their father's research is in his head, and demonstrates the full abilities of the Intersect to her.
When Chuck states that he's Agent X, knowing it is the code name for the first human Intersect, Ellie reveals that the first Intersect was uploaded a year before Chuck's birth. After Chuck repairs the damaged laptop, they find a redacted file on a British scientist whose first name is Hartley. Chuck then flashes on the photo of a house included in the file, learning of Hartley's last known location. Ellie wants to come along but Chuck refuses her, reminding her that she still has Baby Clara to worry about.
Chuck, Sarah, and Casey travel to Hartley's home in Somerset, UK. They tell the elderly woman living there that their car broke down before casually inquiring over whether Hartley once lived in the house. She says he might have left a box of things in the basement and asks Chuck to help her carry it. Casey voices his suspicions that the woman may attempt to poison them. Chuck notices a nearby picture featuring a mother and son and flashes, realizing that the woman, Mrs. Winterbottom, is Hartley's mother.
At that moment, Mrs. Winterbottom returns and points a shotgun at him, demanding to know what he wants with her son. When Chuck explains that he's CIA, she becomes even more hostile, blaming the CIA for sending her son into the field unprepared, then disavowing him after failing to extract him after he went missing on his undercover assignment. Chuck says his father spent his life looking for Hartley, and she lowers the weapon and asks if he's Stephen Bartowski's boy. Chuck is surprised that she knew his father and she said Stephen and Hartley were quite close. She is willing to help Chuck.
When Riley and Jasmine arrive with an assault team, Mrs. Winterbottom tells Chuck and Sarah to find Hartley's Spy Will in the basement while she and Casey fight off the assault team, and she sets up a machine gun saying she expected something like this to happen one day. When they run out of ammunition, Mrs Winterbottom sets a trap comprised of a grenade and C4 earning Casey's admiration, they then escape out the back as the mercenaries enter the front. The bomb kills Jasmine and the mercenaries. Mrs Winterbottom wishes the team luck, and Casey admiringly comments, "I love this woman."
When Ellie, Chuck, Sarah, Casey, and Morgan open Hartley's spy will, they discover a photograph of a young Alexei Volkoff, labeled "Hartley". The accompanying computer disks, examined by Casey, confirm that Hartley was originally sent undercover to find out about arms dealers until his version of the Intersect malfunctioned and overwrote his personality with that of his cover identity: Volkoff. Casey instructs everyone to meet him in the interrogation room, where he turns off the camera. He explains to them that since the CIA inadvertently created one of the world's most dangerous madman, they'd do anything to cover up his existence, including instructing a guy like Casey to put a bullet in each of their heads. He advises them to forget they ever saw that photo.
When Chuck and Ellie, later discuss the discovery, she suggests that Stephen intended for her and Chuck to help Hartley, that it wasn't a job for the CIA, but for them. Casey is seen storing Hartley's spy will.
Meanwhile, disappointed by the Las Vecas trip, Big Mike, Jeff and Lester decide to go to Reno. However, with exchanging hands at the wheel on the road, Jeff brings them to Renaux, British Columbia. Luckily for Big Mike and Lester, there is a steakhouse with a blackjack table nearby.
